Walter Smart, Jr.
Human Resource Development Manager
Peterbilt Motors Co.
With Walter Smart, INROADS is truly a family affair. Walter earns a place in INROADS history, as he is the first Alum to have a child also become an INROADS Intern.
For 29 years, INROADS has been a part of Walter’s life. He began as an Intern at Aladdin Industries in 1978, and has continued to be involved as a training workshop facilitator for the Nashville INROADS office and the National Leadership Development Institute.
“INROADS has always been and will always be special to me. If it were not for INROADS, I would not have been afforded the great career opportunities that I’ve enjoyed throughout my career,” says Walter.
The major component of an INROADS Internship is the depth of training students experience. As a mechanical engineering student at Tennessee State University, Walter says, “The workshops and training gave me an upper hand in knowing what to expect in the workplace and how to handle situations appropriately and professionally. I was very well prepared.”
“I always encourage talented minority students who are pursuing careers in business, to give the INROADS process a thorough review because the opportunities are without limits, adds Walter.
Walter has worked with the Peterbilt Motors Company for more than 23 years. During that time, he has received seven promotions and made a career change from engineering and plant operations to human resources. Today, he gives thanks to his INROADS mentors for the sage advice and inspiration they gave him as an Intern because he is now able to do the same for others.
