Alumnus Spotlight: Anthony Mays

I wasn’t supposed to be a Googler. Where I come from, guys like me are not expected to become software engineers.

Anthony Mays overcame poverty, abuse and growing up in foster homes to become the first in his family to attend a four-year university. After that, he secured his dream job as a software engineer for Google.

“While I’ve always tended to be naturally inquisitive and creative, I had to learn good leadership through the invaluable training I received as an INROADS intern,” said Mays.

Anthony discovered his love for computers in high school, where he took every opportunity he could to visit the school’s small computer lab. He met INROADS staff person, Bryan Barnes, during his high school senior year. That summer, INROADS secured an internship for Anthony as a programmer at City National Bank. For three summers, INROADS trained Anthony and paired him with successful mentors. He learned valuable leadership and career development skills while gaining on-the-job experience. He became a full-time, salaried employee by the time he graduated from college. And now he is living his dream.

“While I’ve always tended to be naturally inquisitive and creative, I had to learn good leadership through the invaluable training I received as an INROADS intern,” said Mays.
