UnitedHealth Group’s Chief Inclusion & Diversity Officer Brings Innovative Strategies to Nonprofit

ST. LOUIS, MO, MAY 7, 2020 — Karen Sachs has recently been appointed to the INROADS, Inc. National Board of Directors. Sachs is Senior Vice President, Engagement, and Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer at UnitedHealth Group, a diversified health care company dedicated to helping people live healthier lives and helping to make the health system work better for everyone. Sachs brings a global portfolio of more than 30 years of human resources experience to the board position.

For 50 years, INROADS has delivered innovative programs and creative solutions that identify, accelerate and elevate the development of underrepresented talent throughout their careers. It is the largest national nonprofit dedicated to training and developing underserved talent with offices across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“Karen’s presence on our national board of directors is truly an incredible honor because she provides such critical insights when it comes to talent development,” said Forest T. Harper Jr., INROADS president and CEO. “Her global reach broadens our sphere of influence to impact more students, and we are elated to have her help us continue to enhance our mission.”

Sachs began her human resources (HR) career in management consulting, leading early career recruiting programs and then at Cargill, emerging to lead HR and Communications for a global business. During this time, she developed strong skills in the area of talent and diversity and inclusion (D&I), serving more than 10 years in establishing models and launching strategies to help embed D&I messages and best practices in businesses across Europe, Asia, Latin America and North America. In 2016, she joined UnitedHealth Group as a Human Capital business partner in Optum Operations and was then asked to lead Culture, Inclusion & Diversity and Social Responsibility across Optum. In 2019, she was promoted to her current role at UnitedHealth Group, leading Culture, Inclusion & Diversity.

“Helping influence and facilitate change at UnitedHealth Group has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” said Sachs. “I’m proud of the ways we create and promote an inclusive culture, helping to see and experience diversity at all levels – and the resulting engagement, innovation and performance. I am honored to share my knowledge and experiences with INROADS to help support this wonderful organization.”

Sachs will serve on the INROADS National Board of Directors for a three-year board term, working with the board member team to advance the organization’s mission.
