From Limiting Beliefs to Limitless Potential | First-Generation Edition with Lindsey Benitez

At the INROADS National Conference, leadership coach and HR professional Lindsey Benitez delivered a powerful session on identifying and breaking free from the mental barriers that hold us back, especially for first-generation students and professionals.

Drawing from over 15 years in HR leadership, Lindsey revealed how internalized messages, cultural expectations, and self-doubt can quietly shape career paths, and how reframing those beliefs can unlock new possibilities.

First-generation status may mean being the first to attend college, work in a corporate setting, start a business, or even travel abroad.

Benitez shared her own journey—letting go of the belief that success meant becoming a doctor or lawyer—and creating a career on her own terms.

Language shapes mindset. Small shifts—“I think I can” to “I know I can”, “I was rejected” to “I was redirected”—can change how you feel, how you act, and ultimately, what you achieve.

Common beliefs that hold people back include:

  • Resting is lazy.
  • Asking for help is weakness.
  • Success equals title and salary.
  • “I should be grateful for any opportunity.”
  • Pursuing passion is unrealistic.
Benitez urged attendees to notice which beliefs they’ve internalized and ask, “Do I want to keep believing this?”

Her three-step method:

  1. Identify the belief.
  2. Challenge its truth.
  3. Reframe it into an empowering statement that opens possibilities instead of closing them.

If your current circle reinforces limiting beliefs, seek out communities and mentors with a growth mindset. Benitez suggested modeling new, empowering language in your own conversations—gradually influencing the people around you.

Limitless Potential Begins with Awareness.

By spotting the beliefs that hold you back, questioning their truth, and replacing them with language that empowers, you can define success for yourself. As Lindsey reminded attendees,
“You can be grateful and still know what you deserve.”
