My parents grew up in the Bronx and Brooklyn, two of the most dangerous areas in the United States at the time, but through hard work became the first people in both of their families to graduate from college. I am proud that within a couple generations, my family went from economic hardship to prosperity. All of this inspires me to continue the legacy and build on the successes of those who came before me.
I have participated in the INROADS College Links program for my entire high school career, and it has made a significant difference in my life. The program has increased the number of opportunities and resources available to me for higher education and employment. Being part of College Links has helped me build strengths, financial knowledge, and soft skills that will help me in the business world and adulthood.
Through my participation in INROADS, I now have a greater understanding of why diversity in the workplace is so needed. My culture is an extremely important part of my identity, and I now have confidence I can honor my heritage in a professional environment.
I also had the honor to receive the INROADS Myrna Garcia Visiones Scholarship, which has built my confidence and provided me with the opportunity to pursue a college education. Receiving the scholarship honors my family's culture and history of pursuing new opportunities in the U.S. I feel recognized for all the work I have put in throughout my high school career.
